Meet Cassandra and Brian...there first encounter was the bride-to-be’s last night intown. She was headed back to NY, after a fabulous 4^th of July withfriends and family.

Not the typical boy meets girls; falls madly in love, romanticscenario either, Cassandra and Brian’s first date did not go so well… Isn’t itfunny how love blooms when you least expect it?

From 2007 to 2011, the two moved from friendship tocourtship, conducted over the phone and many frequent flyer miles. Distance wasthe determining factor, as the relationship was a bit strained Brian made thetransition from Charlotte, NC to NY to be closer to Cassandra.

In October, Brian placed an engagement ring on Cassandra’sring finger in the midst of a nap during their European rendezvous; in Berlin… uponwaking she realized the question at hand.

Wow! is all I can say... time flies when you're having FUN! I'd like to apologize to my readers as I realized especially because of the Jan. 2011 date, that I have not posted in what seems to be ions.

Well I (we) have made several changes, first with location, and then in my studies (graduation), as well as I took a much needed break, from all the bells and whistles, that accompany planning of any sort. With that said, "I'm back....!"

My plan is this, to be a source of insight, with reviews and to-do list, ways to save and love stories that make you smile.

Weddings are stories within themselves, every member of the bridal party, actors in their own right... Atmosphere's and backdrops that scream love is here, creating memories all so very near to our hearts:
these are the Enchanted and Engaged memoirs.

If you are in the midst of planning your wedding and are starting to feel overwhelmed and all you need is a good laugh, we recommend checking out this book! It is a fun and light hearted read that will make you laugh out loud! This read is not limited to just the bride, this is a great book for anyone involved in the wedding planning process!

This book is based on southern weddings, specifically weddings that take place in the Mississippi Delta.
Just to get you started, here is an excerpt from the book:

Ancient Anecdotes...

Nina Curtis of the Nile Institute shared some ancient anecdotes for preparing for your big day. “In Indonesia, the bride-to-be enjoys a Javanese royal lulur (translation: coating of the skin) a luxurious ritual from the royal Palaces of Indonesia, conducted each day for forty days before her wedding to get prepared for the ceremony.

During this time, she is given a Balinese massage, a sweet skin scrub, and a full-body mask with yogurt, turmeric, rice and jasmine essential oils along with flower petal baths.” The older female relatives who administer the lulur also use the time to pass on wisdom and nurturing. I don’t know about you but I’m all for adopting this tradition into my lifestyle, immediately, the 40 days of service, would be absolutely blissful.

The Groom's Guide: Keeping Your Bride Happy

“I’ll let her make all the decisions. She’s the one that cares about that stuff.”
This statement only works if your Bride(zilla) is demanding total control over every detail of the wedding, or, if your future mother-in-law is planning her dream wedding for you. If you’re in a normal relationship, your bride probably wants and needs your help in the planning of this special day (or at least help persuading her mom that you don’t want to be married in the backyard).

From my experience, any participation on your part helps to relieve some of the stress she may be feeling, and we all know what happens when a bride is stressed. Taking an active roll in some of the planning is an easy way to show you’re interested in contributing, and it also keeps you from wearing a fuchsia cumber bun that matches the bridesmaid’s dresses (FYI: fuchsia = pinkish purple). Through first-hand experience, I have mastered a few simple techniques that keep you from missing the big game to shop for centerpieces, and will help you stay in good graces with your bride. In looking at wedding dresses each season I always fall in love with Melissa Sweet wedding dresses. Such whimsy...

All of the dresses have an innocent sophistication about them. I swoon.....

Plus,I love the idea of changing your dress for the reception and putting on a short cocktail length number. I envy those girls who are daring enough to wear a cocktail length dress for the entire wedding. That would be great for an intimate wedding in a garden where you and your new hubby can walk around in the garden for pictures, dare I say it... barefoot.

I cannot deny my love of Etsy. It is the place to find fabulous vintage and homemade pieces that are perfect for the unique bride. As Coco Chanel said "A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous." I could not agree more and I am obsessed with these pieces at Little White Dresser.

Centerpieces...

Centerpieces can really set the tone of your event, rather it be at your reception, shower or rehearsal dinner. Ideas depend on your style and the style of the event. After extensive research I'm persuade to share a few helpful hints when considering centerpieces for your table tops:

~ Consider the room size first and foremost... If it is a large venue, use larger arrangements with height and volume to fill space.

~ If the venue is one that allows an intimate atmosphere, use smaller arrangements that sit closer to the table.

~ When choosing arrangement size, consider your guest, and their ability to converse during your fabulous event...you'll want to make sure that your guest can talk to one another from across the table.

~ Be sure to have a clear understanding of the do's and don'ts with regard to the establishment you choose. Every place has rules about what you can and cannot do. Some have rules about holes in the walls, tape and candles to name a few.

Picking a Planner

The afterglow of the engagement has begun to wane and reality sets in: you have a wedding to plan!! Although most brides are excited to dream up ideas for their big day, many are daunted by the task of planning, designing and coordinating one of the biggest parties of their lives. After all, this is probably the first (and hopefully the only!) wedding you will ever plan. It’s at this point that many people decide to enlist the guidance and expertise of a wedding planner. In honor of what many people believe to be the hottest engagement season of the year (the summer!), I thought I’d write up a little post on how you should go about picking the perfect planner for YOU.

1) The sooner the better. I strongly recommend hiring a planner as early in the process as possible. A great planner will be able to assist you with key initial tasks like drawing up a realistic budget, scouting for the perfect venue, and providing you with personalized referrals for the best vendors around. Also, if you intend to utilize a planner for event design, you will want them around as you begin considering palettes, floral designs, etc. Once you decide you want a wedding planner (or even a coordinator) on-board, begin researching fab ones in your area.

2) Make a list of your “wants.” What exactly do you want your planner to do for you? Make a list of basic duties you’d like to delegate to him/her. This will help you as you research local options and sort through their lists of services. A key question to consider is: How involved do you want your planner to be in the design of the wedding day? Do you need a creative visionary to shower you with unique, custom-tailored ideas and personalized service? Or do you see yourself just needing an industry “insider” as a sounding board for your own ideas? Having a clear picture of what you want your planner to do will help you find him/her!

3) Do your homework! Begin the research process! Start by checking in with friends and acquaintances for any word-of-mouth referrals. They are your strongest, most reliable sources of information! If they have rave reviews about a planner in the area, they are worth checking out. You can also scan local wedding websites (Get Married is a wonderful example here in NC) for candid reviews from real brides. Make a list of 5-10 planners that catch your attention. Once you have an initial list, visit their websites and read about them and their work. Narrow down your initial list to a handful you’d like to seriously consider.

4) Make contact. Send out emails to the potential planners that made your short-list. Make sure you send individual emails and not just a generic, “Please send me your price list.” ;-) You can fill out an inquiry form on their website (if one is available) to give them key information: your wedding date, location(s) and services needed/desired. If you don’t have a date or site yet, let them know that securing those things is part of what you’d like them to help you do.

5) Assess and review. Now you sit back and wait for the replies to come back. Take note of how the planner comes across. Were they timely in responding? Did they seem genuinely interested in your day, or did you receive some standard letter written out to “Dear Bride-to-be”?? You want to feel good vibes immediately, so trust your gut here. This is also when you review their proposals and pricing. Who fits in the budget? Who is worth a potential splurge? Who is totally out of the ballpark? Determine which of the planners are worth meeting in person for a consultation (which should be complimentary!).

6) Follow your heart! As you meet with planners in person, the rules sort of fly out the window. This is the time to trust your instincts and go with the person you “click” with! One of my sweet 2008 brides confided that when she met another planner, she thought to herself, “Ugh, I can’t stand her sweater! If she wears stuff like that, how can I trust her to plan my wedding??” Haha I know that sounds harsh, but if you are going to invest in hiring a planner, you’re allowed to use your own criteria. ;-)

Here are some more standard criteria you should look for: * attention to detail * organization * great communication skills (written and verbal) * enthusiasm for you and your event * sincerity and kindness * professionalism * a strong sense of style and design.

As I mentioned, you are allowed to bring in any other factors as you weigh your options. I strongly suggest not just hiring someone you believe to be competent… but rather springing for someone you LOVE. That’s right… you should LOVE your wedding planner! You should be thrilled to have this person on board for the next few months (or year!). If you are inviting someone into your life to plan such a momentous event for you, you want to actually enjoy working with them. How awful would it be to hesitate every time you called your planner because you felt like you were bothering him/her?? How sad would it be if you never asked your planner any questions about your ideas because you felt like they didn’t really ‘get’ your style? How horrible would it be if you hired someone who didn’t seem to care about you or your event? It would be a definite bummer. There are many people out there who can get the job done, but who is going to enrich your experience? My clients and I almost have a two-way screening process. When they interview me, I am also feeling them out for that “click”. I usually know within 3 minutes if they are the right fit for me. ;-)

As a result, I build the most amazing relationships with my clients because we are so well suited for one another. My clients email me about everything and anything, call me at 1 a.m. in the morning when they have a brilliant idea and feel free to vent when things get overwhelming. I want to be a friend, confidante and trusted adviser throughout the entire process. It is a role I cherish and take very seriously. Wedding planning is a wonderful, glorious, joyful and altogether delightful process.

Your wedding coordinator should come equipped with many things: boundless enthusiasm, quick thinking, a great sense of style and of course… a well-stocked emergency kit. When I first started out, I used a large-sized stitched suitcase from paper-source. It was pink, totally adorable, and very portable. I’ve now graduated to a much larger chartreuse suitcase, also from paper-source…

It offers much more space and durability, but is a tad bulky. I think I have a new solution for 2009, though! ;-) I will keep you posted on that front!

Anyway, I thought it would be helpful to run through some key items that you may need on the big day. Hopefully this will also prove useful for those of you who are going without a coordinator. I know it seems like quite an investment to make for just one day, but most of the items are probably things you already own. Make sure to keep these items close at hand… just in case!

Safety pins (in various sizes): my #1 most-requested item.

Straight pins: these are great for reinforcing boutonnières and express alterations

Sewing kit: I have had to bust out mine on many occasions! I carry over 20 colors of thread, 5 sizes of needles and little scissors, extra buttons + snaps, etc…. just to be safe!

Band-aids, in various sizes. I carry Hello Kitty and Cars ones for the kiddos and sheer ones for the adults.

Ointment for those owwies! I prefer Brave Soldier Antiseptic Healing Ointment… one of my fave products of all time!

Moist towelettes + hand sanitizer

Chapstick

Visine: a more recent addition! I don’t wear contacts so this is one item I never would have thought to include. Once I added it (for a client who had sensitive eyes), I have had to pull it out frequently!

Blister cushions + moleskin

Breath mints

Tissues (I like the Kleenex pocket packs)

Scissors (I bring a general purpose pair as well as a craft pair — just for paper.)

Long lighters, for all those candles! I am constantly buying these and always want two fresh ones in my case at all times!

Advil, Tylenol, Midol, etc.

Feminine hygiene products

Double-sided tape

Hollywood Fashion Tape (to avoid those pesky wardrobe malfunctions!)

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but hopefully it gets you thinking about some commonly-used items! I have used every single item listed above! The bride should also have a touch-up kit with the makeup used that day, which many stylists will provide.

On the wedding day, I transform into seamstress, hair stylist, and personal assistant. I arrive, darling suitcase in tow, ready to face whatever may arise!

Place Card vs. Escort Card Conundrum

Clients and wedding guests sometimes wonder about the difference between escort cards and place cards, but it is very simple. Escort cards send your guests to their correct table, while place cards tell them which seat is theirs at the table. It is important to at least have assigned tables, so there is a smooth transition from your ceremony to your reception, without guests wondering where they should sit or with whom.

Adorable cards with attached table numbers would hang nicely on a cute bulletin board or a tree. Escort cards can be simple or creative, such as real sand dollars that hang on a little tree.

Often times for small weddings, escort cards are not needed if your guests are sitting at one long table. It’s easier for them to just walk around until they find their names.

Place cards too can be very meaningful such as bookmarks placed at each seat with the guest’s name inscribed across the top edge in Copperplate Script.

Menus with belly bands are one of my favorite ways to creatively use place cards. Though not all receptions require place cards, sometimes your caterer or the venue requires them. If you are confused about whether you need them, you should consult with your wedding planner or venue coordinator.

When you close your eyes, how do you envision your special day? Some brides can describe every element, down to the precise shade of nail enamel to be worn on the big day. But if you’re in the early stages of planning, chances are you’re more than a smidgen overwhelmed with all the choices available.

My best advice: Start with colors!

Once you decide on a color scheme, you can secure the rest of the details. Do you want an all white affair? Or do pastels speak to you? Making the decision is easier said than done, of course. Let your own tastes and quirks guide your decisions and you’ll be rewarded with an event that you (and your guests) will treasure.

The best compliment you can receive after your wedding is that it “felt like you.” In my experience, I’ve found that the most enjoyable and most unforgettable weddings are those that truly reflect the personalities of the bride and groom. Follow all the “rules” and you’ll have a model wedding – something gorgeous, perhaps, but unsurprising.....

If you're as busy as I think you are, you’re making list and checking them twice, crossing off tasks trying to get as much as possible done. So I’d thought I’d help by offering words of advice before you take on a rental party supplier. You should know before going into a gallery, your location (and booked it), your guest-list complied, a decision on the type of service you desire (for example, buffet or sit down), settled on the color scheme and palette and design of the invitations all before considering your rental options.

Bring as much inspiration as you can to the first meeting. Fabrics swatches, images from magazines and some personal items you love will help ensure you get the most out of your visit. It may seem elementary at first but the more guidance you offer, the easier and less cookie-cutter your wedding will be.

When’s the best time to book a party-rental supplier?

We suggest you speak with one two to three months before the wedding. That’s usually enough time for them to secure products you want, and it gives you a chance to settle the details of the wedding so you’ll have a better idea of what you want.

Instead of taking your mom or bridesmaid along on the first visit, bring your caterer or event planner. She or he will have an idea of the kinds of service equipment and the number of everything you’ll need. It becomes a much easier task for everyone involved.

If you desire to create a modern look, bring in different styles that work together to create a mix of classic items and more modern pieces. If your eco-conscious, ask your vendor to create a green package that includes recycled glassware, china and fabrics.

If your wondering how many items will you need, let’s say plates; a good rule of thumb is to have five percent more pieces on-hand for a seated dinner. For a cocktail hour, you’ll need at least three glasses for each person.

Last thing...items you will probably forget: Brides forget things like coat-check items (hangers and tags), screens to section off the kitchen area, table numbers and stands, even dance floors. Your planner or caterer should remind you to order them, but if you forget to factor these items into your budget it could be very costly and that’s something to think about.....
